Well, in just a few more hours we will have officially survived our first full week with Summer (who btw is about 9 months old, 24 lbs, and is thought to be a cocker spaniel/retriever mix). Everyone is adjusting well and Scout is an exceptional big brother. Since blogging about every detail of the past week with Summer would be 1. ridiculously long and 2. probably boring to most of you so I shall refrain :-). Here are the highlights:
* The vet the shelter sends dogs to in order to be fixed as part of the adoption package is not our normal vet. It is also a vet that B and I will NEVER use again. For example, we knew more about the recovery from surgery process than they did, and we don't take care of other people's pets for a living. They also didn't know how much Summer weighed and gave her heart-worm preventative medicine that is supposed to be for cattle. I tried to google the medicine name and it was misspelled on the label they wrote.
* Summer definitely was an indoor pet prior to her life in the shelter and with us. " Go Potty" meant nothing to her however "Peepee" and "Poopoo" generated immediate responses from her. B feels really manly when he takes her out :-P.
* Scout thinks she's a miniature version of the golden retriever next door (Maggie)... and sometimes wants to play rough with her like he does with Maggie... we're working on this.
* Otherwise they get along as though they've lived together forever... Scout shares toys (and by share I'm including borrowing the ones left in her kennel when she's not looking), they play tug of war and chase, take walks together well, and will even curl up with one another from time to time.
* Summer likes you if she runs up to you, gets your attention and then flops on her back for you to rub her belly... she will lay like this as long as you will pet her and might have even fallen asleep this way a time or two...
All in all having another dog definitely created a new dynamic at our house, but it's a great one. Scout has really impressed us with how easy this transition has been, and Summer is just adorable and as sweet as they come. Below is the picture B snapped of her resting her head on the console of his truck on their first ride together... precious...
